Sailor Extraordinaire


Marcus has sailed scores of sailboats, skippering many vessels over thousands of nautical miles of oceans, bays, and rivers around the country. He is the founder of Universal Sailing Club, the only African American sailing club on the US East Coast. He is known as a safe captain and crewman, capable of helming, navigating, and managing crews as a teacher and leader. 



Education and Youth Development


Marcus believes in a practical and hands-on approach to education. This knowledge has benefitted his boating customers, and also his students in various indoor and outdoor classroom settings. He worked as the Maritime Studies Instructor at the late Congressman Elijah Cummings' Maritime High School in Baltimore MD, serving many high school students.  



Boat Work, Marine Systems and Sales


Marcus is a 2012 graduate of the Marine Systems Program at The Landing School in Arundel Maine.

He has done work on hundreds of vessels, including electrical, plumbing, sailboat rigging, fiberglass repair, sail repair, woodworking, and marine engines. Marcus was previously a sales broker for Red Beard Sailing in Baltimore.

Environmental Conservation


Whether planting trees with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks or restoring trails with Student Conservation Association, Marcus has been an advocate of numerous conservation efforts. He also lives a natural lifestyle while being a vegetarian for over 30 years.

Media and Community Outreach


Many radio stations, talk shows, and media outlets have asked Marcus to speak about his unique perspective on African-American participation in sailing, and his innovative approaches to education. He has lectured on topics where water and history intersect, and is quoted in numerous marine industry magazines

There's so much exciting history to study and so many sources of information to consider.  Marcus visits locations, does the research, and talks to many people to discover compelling stories worthy of mention.

Reaching a Worldwide Musical Family

Marcus comes from a long line of family musicians and plays numerous instruments. He is best known as a drummer and has created a style that combines American, Caribbean, and African influences. He has performed in Europe, Japan, Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
